Vaccine. UNICEF is mounting a mammoth operation to distribute vaccines against COVID-19
Etleva Kadilli, Director of UNICEF Supply Division , highlighted the importance of the partnership in ensuring capacity for the massive enterprise.
“As work to develop COVID-19 vaccines continues, UNICEF is stepping up efforts with airlines, cargo operators, shipping lines and other logistics partnerships to deliver life-saving vaccines as quickly and safely as possible. This invaluable collaboration will go a long way to ensuring there is sufficient shipping capacity for this historic and mammoth operation. "We need all hands on deck as we prepare to deliver COVID-19 vaccine doses, syringes and more personal protective equipment to protect frontline workers around the world ," said Etleva Kadilli, Director of the Division of UNICEF Supplies .
“Largest” and “fastest” operation to date
To kick-start preparations, UNICEF, together Chile Mobile Number List with the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) and the International Air Transport Association (IATA) , briefed major global airlines last week on expected capacity requirements and discussed ways to transport nearly 2 billion doses of COVID-19 for next year. This is in addition to the billion syringes that must be transported by sea.
In the coming weeks, UNICEF will also be assessing existing transport capacity, with the aim of identifying gaps and future requirements.
The procurement, delivery and distribution of COVID-19 vaccines is anticipated to be the largest and fastest operation ever undertaken.
UNICEF.
UNICEF is leading efforts to procure and deliver vaccines from manufacturers that have agreements with the COVAX facility. In collaboration with PAHO, UNICEF will coordinate purchasing and delivery to 92 low- and lower-middle-income economies as quickly and safely as possible.
Unmatched experience
The efforts build on UNICEF's long standing with the logistics industry to transport supplies around the world despite pandemic-related restrictions. Since January, it has delivered more than $190 million in COVID-19 supplies such as masks, gowns, oxygen concentrators and diagnostic testing kits to help countries respond to the pandemic.
As the world's largest single purchaser of vaccines, UNICEF typically procures more than two billion vaccine doses annually for routine immunization and outbreak response on behalf of nearly 100 countries.
This unparalleled experience includes coordinating thousands of shipments with diverse cold chain requirements, making the UN agency an expert in supply chain management of temperature-controlled products, which is especially needed during this historic company.
